Dinner: Have 3 pieces of smoked salmon, some steamed green beans with a little sesame oil and seeds. Compliment that with a cup of cabbage coleslaw made with a low fat dressing. By the way, you can add a little Teriyaki sauce on your smoked salmon to make it taste better.

Snack: Have some olives, raisins and cubed white cheese.

Slim Fast is both a brand and a claim of the makers. Originally made by the Thompson Medical Company, in 2000 it was acquired by Unilever who are now the current owners. The principle behind the program is simple. You have one “regular” meal a day and all the other meals are replaced by their products. It’s been around for years and a lot of people swear by it. Generally, it’s pretty good providing you like (most of the time) drinking your meals. You can imagine you’re an astronaut if it will make you feel any better.

The Slim Fast plan does have a few restrictions though. You must not be pregnant, as much as possible be over 18, plan to lose a maximum of 30 pounds, not nursing and don’t have any major health problems. Other than that, you’re good to go. Naturally, it is strongly advised that you first consult your doctor before going on any weight reduction program.

So what’s the plan? On a typical day, a lot of people don’t really eat much at breakfast so it’s not a biggie to have one of their shakes and an apple or any fruit. For lunch, a sandwich or a huge 200 grams of whatever you want and a shake. As a mid afternoon snack, you can have something light like gelatin. For dinner it is (surprise, surprise) a shake, some protein dish like fish, lean meat or skinless chicken or turkey and a salad.

So what really happens is that two of your main meals are replaced by their product. Again if you don’t mind drinking say, your breakfast and dinner, then this diet is for you. Although Slim Fast has come up with chewable bars, their main products are in the form of powders, smoothies and shakes. For the people that don’t like cooking and don’t mind replacing a solid meal with something liquid or using a straw instead of a spoon and fork, then I guess this is okay.

So, am I proponent of this program? Probably not. Although it has been round for quite some time, and a lot of people do swear by it and its’ effects, there are a lot of other simpler, non restrictive and not to mention cheaper ways of losing weight like plain old watching what you eat and exercise. Incidentally, the Slim Fast program or plan does still advise that you do exercise.

One major drawback of the Slim Fast plan is availability of their product. It is not readily available worldwide. Even in the US, not all stores carry the line. I read a comment from a lady in nearby Mexico who could not find a store that sells it. Some of my friends who live in Asia for example have trouble. And the price is double what you would pay for here. If you were shipped overseas on an extended tour for example, what do you do then? Anything more than a case or two of the stuff will be classified as commercial quantity and the duties will be out of this world. So is Slim Fast a diet or just a very clever marketing program? You decide.
